MANCHESTER – On behalf of its managed facilities, iCare Management is pleased to announce a new consulting relationship with Dr. J. Craig Allen, to provide services as Medical Consultant for Substance Use Disorders. Dr. Allen will be instrumental in guiding and supporting iCare’s iRecovery Program.
Operating in eight iCare facilities, iRecovery is designed to treat active addiction and teach sober recovery skills with the goal of long-term sobriety and recovery through intensive group and individual therapy for patients in the skilled nursing setting. Methadone maintenance as an element of recovery is a tenant of the model.
Among other objectives, Dr. Allen will provide consultation on specific resident cases, policy and procedure support and review, education, and general program guidance.
Dr. Allen is an Addiction Medicine specialist, also board certified in General and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He is on the state of Connecticut’s Alcohol and Drug Policy Council (ADPC), Advisory board for the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) and the president elect for CT Chapter of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). In 2016 he was named to the Medical Director’s Institute of the National Council for Behavioral Health where he serves on the Medication Assisted Treatment Workgroup.
Dr. Allen sat on the SAMHSA Pharmacotherapy Expert Consensus Panel for individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, was Unit Chief at Riverview Hospital (Connecticut’s state hospital for Children and Youth) and has held the title of Clinical Instructor in Psychiatry at both Harvard and Yale Medical Schools.
Currently Dr. Allen trains Psychiatry Residents, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellows from the Institute of Living in Addiction Psychiatry and teaches and advocates for prevention, screening, early intervention and treatment access for Substance use and other Psychiatric disorders across the state and nationally. Dr. Allen has a private practice in Branford.
