MANCHESTER (July 10, 2023) – July 9-15 is National Therapeutic Recreation Week and although it is organized through the National Recreation and Park Association, iCare celebrates its Recreation team and all of the amazing work they have done in the last year and beyond.
Therapeutic recreation stands out as an essential element in enhancing the quality of life for nursing home residents. As we celebrate National Therapeutic Recreation Week, it is crucial to recognize the important role this specialized form of recreation plays in the lives of those in long-term care. Their expertise ensures that each resident’s unique needs and interests are considered, fostering engagement and promoting overall well-being.
Therapeutic Recreation is a systematic process that utilizes recreation and other activity-based interventions to address the assessed needs of individuals with illnesses and/or disabling conditions, as a means to psychological and physical health, recovery and well-being. It involves assessment of an individual’s needs and functioning, planning of interventions, implementation of services, evaluation of interventions and progress, and documentation.
Each care center’s Therapeutic Recreation Department creates daily life enrichment for nursing home residents and are tasked with keeping it lively, engaging, fun, appropriate to the skills of the individual and providing variety. Services are designed to restore, remediate and rehabilitate a person’s level of functioning and independence in life activities, especially in conjunction with nursing and therapy services.
Regular participation in physical activities helps maintain and improve strength, flexibility, and endurance. Exercises such as chair yoga, walking programs, and modified sports not only enhance physical fitness but also contribute to the prevention of chronic diseases and the management of existing conditions.
Participating in recreational activities provides a sense of purpose, joy, and belonging. By challenging their minds and stimulating their intellect, residents can maintain mental acuity and a sense of mental vitality. Whether it’s through art therapy, music programs, or group outings, residents are able to express themselves creatively, connect with others, and find solace in shared experiences. Engaging activities such as puzzles, trivia games, and reminiscence therapy help improve memory, problem-solving skills, and overall cognitive function.
Thank you for all that you do!
