MANCHESTER (February 25, 2025) – This American Heart Month, the iCare Complex Care Team and the Touchpoints Rehab centers invite the entire community—staff, residents, and visitors—to explore heart-smart tips and make small changes that lead to a healthier tomorrow. Signs with tips and healthy habits are in each center lobby.
American Heart Month is observed annually in February to raise awareness about heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. Its purpose is to educate the public about heart disease and its risk factors, encourage healthy lifestyle choices to prevent heart disease and promote early detection and treatment of heart conditions.
Small steps today lead to long-term heart health benefits. A strong heart leads to a long, vibrant life, and small lifestyle changes can make a significant difference. Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats supports heart health. Limiting processed foods, saturated fats, and added sugars is also crucial.
Regular physical activity helps maintain healthy blood pressure, improve circulation, and control weight. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly, including activities like walking, swimming, or cycling, along with strength training. Managing stress through deep breathing, meditation, hobbies, and social connections is equally important, as chronic stress can impact heart health.
Quality sleep supports heart function, so maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and reducing screen time before bed is essential. Monitoring blood pressure and cholesterol levels, along with regular check-ups, aids in early detection of potential issues. Quitting smoking and limiting alcohol intake further reduces the risk of heart disease.
Staying hydrated promotes circulation, and recognizing warning signs such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or dizziness can lead to early intervention. This Heart Month, commit to heart-healthy habits and encourage others to do the same. Small steps today can lead to long-term benefits.
